I wrote this right after getting back from Big Dub back in August, but was unable to properly post it through my Evolver mirror of this blog while their blogs are in limbo.
Event: Big Dub Festival 2012
Dates: August 9-12
Location: Four Quarters Farm, Artemas, PA
What. An. Event.
Having had a few days to decompress and mull
over my experiences, I wanted to share my perspectives about my
experience as a guest speaker on behalf of Evolver DC, as well as a
participant.
I came to Big Dub 2012 as a first-timer, both to the
festival itself and to festivals like it. While I’m a multi-year member
of the Burning Man community and have been to numerous Burns in the
Mid-Atlantic, I had no experience with music festivals prior to my
arrival at Four Quarters Farm on Friday afternoon.
Having landed
my tent and stuff with some friend’s of my host, Vikas, and having taken
care of some minor logistical issues for Evolver, the first order of
business was to take in a workshop by Asher - a fellow trained shaman -
who delivered a great presentation on energy work, chakras, stone
reading and shamanism in the Farm’s labyrinth. I was impressed by the
turnout that he received, and was struck by both the level of interest
and the metaphysical knowledge of the other attendees. It started my
experience at Big Dub off on a great note, and set the stage for the
many surprises and experiences that awaited.
That first night I
spent dancing at the main stage, loving the dubstep, electro and hard
house that was being spun. I also got a chance to spin fire with
another fire performer and fellow Burner - Andrij. I was in a great
state of mind and energy and really connecting with the experience on
all levels. Then after a brief lull to recharge in the stone circle, I
connected with two other spiritually tapped in women who I spent the
rest of the evening with dancing and flowing with energetically down at
the second stage. I wrapped my evening up that night around the fire at
the sweat lodge, discussing energy, spirituality, shamanism and the
night’s experiences with a group of diverse and amazing people who had
all been drawn to the grounding energy of the fire.
I woke up
the next day amped for my two presentations for Evolver DC - the first
on Spirituality and Dance, and the second on Flow Art and Transcendental
Connectivity. There was a powerful and open discussion that opened up
in the first workshop about dance, spirituality, letting the music move
you and celebrating spirituality with the body on the dance floor. I
was excited to talk about the art of surrender as a dancer and as a
spiritual practitioner - how to let the energy in the music and the
moment move you in the body and the soul, and how to allow that opening
and surrender create powerful opportunities for spiritual exploration
and metaphysical practice. It was great to share the practices of
Shamans, Sufis, Tantrics and others that rely so heavily on dance to
experience a connection with something much more powerful than
ourselves, and to have such a receptive and plugged in audience. That
discussion on movement and connectivity continued into the workshop on
Flow Art, and I was very grateful to be able to join forces with Andrij
in delivering a presentation that combined philosophy, theory and
practice into a powerful learning experience for the attendees (who got
to learn how to spin contact staff while learning about to connect
spiritually while spinning).
I came into this event with as few
expectations as possible, and left moved and humbled at the people and
experiences that I had connected with. Its amazing to see how much
energy we raised together over the past weekend, and it was encouraging
to meet so many other people at Big Dub who are plugging into deeper
possibilities both during event and after they leave. I’m so grateful
to Big Dub’s organizers for having me, Vikas and Evolver DC for inviting
me and organizing my presentations, and the land at people at Four
Quarters Farm for their presence and support in hosting it.
Until next year,
Andrew Killilea

Dying the Thousandth Death
Death - letting go. Participating in an end, sometimes The End.
What does it mean to die your thousandth death?
Perhaps even one thousand in a single lifetime. I feel as though I have just left my own four digit death scene, leaving behind a someone whom I no longer could be - becoming as I am, continuing to Be by letting go of what no longer Could Be.
Dying, in my experience, comes in many forms. I have found that death is a process of letting go and embracing what is. Most particularly poignantly felt when the future is a complete unknown and the present feels both painful and impossible to resolve.
Deaths occur with the distance of friends, the alienation of family, the transitions from old homes to new, old jobs to new ones, school to school, school to career - many thousands of endings occur without even touching on its most perfect sublime expression - biological Death: the irrevocable loss of family, loved ones and friends that we all must confront prior to our own expiration.
I have found in my experience that it is not so much Death that is painful, it is the holding on - the resistance - that hurts most. Struggling against a tidal wave of inevitability, we fight tooth and nail to retain every single last possibility that preceded Death, regardless of cost or consequence.
Grieving is something that we should be more adept at than any other human experience, and yet I have always felt it as an agony almost beyond imagining prior to the great final act of Acceptance. The mercy of Letting Go that releases neuro-chemicals, emotional blockages, psychological damage and petty little self-delusions that perpetuated a falseness of Being for what feels like (in the thick of it) an eternity. All boiling over to attain Release - release and transition/transformation into a new state, born again, clean and fresh and ready to rise to a new slate of challenges.
Sometimes almost playfully.
I have grieved many things in life - many losses. The death of both of my parents, of relationships that seemed as though they were destined to last forever, friendships, connections, careers, destinies, beliefs, homes - everything imaginable, really.
And yet ever act of grieving seems as hard as the first, and the much needed release when the end of the process comes an almost unexpected (and confusingly deserved) mercy.
And this is why I take note of my thousandth death, and honor it - even when I would never be able to truly know it from my ten thousandth, or millionth. Because it is a mercy, and a blessing, and a gift. And for it I am grateful.

Life as a Sacred Gift
The Sacred on this world stems from the Power, the Medicine, of Nature. Nature's Power flows from Life. Life is the Sacred Dance that the flame, the spark of Consciousness, flickers for.
What makes Life sacred? Life not just in the sense of lifeforms - living entities - living energies, but the capacity for the experience of a life, of a lifetime. Life in the broadest, systematic sense. Capital 'L' Life as Gaia - the total interconnected biotic mass of any discreet place (planet, galaxy, universe, Reality).
Our capacities in this realm of existence, on this planet, stem from being alive - being pieces of Life - being part of a web formed by Nature: a web upon which we rely for every breath, every drink, every meal.
Without Life - there is no air to breathe, no food, no heart to feel beating in our chests. This experience of Being as we understand WOULD NOT BE.
"Living", or "Being Alive", offers an entity a capacity for engagement with Being in a way that consciously links the metaphysical with the physical. Both physics are part of the weave of the IS - Spirit, God, Reality, the Totality, the Oneness - but Life is the energetic state that allows us as entities to share both experiences simultaneously. It is a unique state - one filled with Power and the opportunity for Transformation.
Respect for Life is, in such a case, not merely a catch phrase or simply a platitude: it is a perspective that is aware of the beauty of the Power granted by Life, and in so doing informs our intention and actions towards it. The more we recognize this Power, the more we Respect, the more we strive to honor and preserve Life in the forms that it presents itself to us.
Love and Compassion towards Life, and towards the ability to sustain it where it is found (such as on this planet), are our way of completing the cycle that starts with awareness of that Power. For such Power is truly a gift, and possibly the greatest one we receive in our manifested existences as discreet entities. With that in mind, begin to account for your own perspectives (and actions) towards Life. Do you Respect the gift that is given - to you and to us all - and act with rightful reciprocity?
Remember: that which you give comes back to you - and giving the gifts of Love and Compassion to Life is a gift that you truly offer to yourself, as one of the integral parts of the Web of Life. How can it not return any less than sevenfold?

A Meditation on Destruction
What is this Destruction you speak of?
I was asked this question by an beautiful soul regarding my last writing. And in receiving that question, I understood the need to clarify and explore it in greater depth. And so I have striven do so here.
Destruction as a concept is filled with intense negative connotation in contemporary English. It is a word that implies violence, the use of force, with overtones of anger and hatred embedded in the intentionality behind it. 'To destroy' a thing is, often in our minds, a terrible and negative act.
But Destruction does not need to be, nor fundamentally is, violent. Destruction, as the opposite component of Creation in the Creation/Destruction duality, simply a part of the reciprocal cycle that allows change and transformation to take place. Rotting wood (destruction) allows for the growth and sustainment of lichens, fungus, worms and grubs (creation) that are then eaten (destruction) to allow bears, birds, insects and eventually people to survive (creation).
Yes, the duality is an illusion. Yes, they are in the end One Force arbitrarily divided by human consciousness into two separate forces. But it is an illusion that we GIVE MEANING TO. And this allowance for MEANING in this duality, as arbitrary as it may be, is one that we are best served to consciously recognize. For by doing so, with full cognizance, we can apprehend Intention in the manifestation of these forces in our reality, in our society, and in ourselves.
What we are aware of, we can consciously participate in: shape. What we are ignorant of, controls us.
We speak often of the New Sun, the New Age/the Age of Aquarius, the New Paradigm, the New America, the New World. Yes - there is something that we have been building together for quite some time! Something not quite like what we have had prior, or have now.
But HOW - how does one manifest the new Creation in a space filled with an old one?
How does one pick up a ripe apple when one's hands are full with rotten cores? Gingerly? Timidly? Balancing the new fresh fruit on the backs of brown and blackened skeletons of decomposing pomes? Or does one put down the old, allowing the energy and matter in them to compost back into the soil, and pick up the new apple firmly, with confidence and power?
Destruction is letting go; it is a means of relinquishing. Nothing more. The Ego lets go of the Body in Death - the Self lets go of the Ego in the moment of Transcendental ecstasy. A mother lets go of her child in birth. We let go of our deceased loves ones through grief.
But intention. THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE. The Destruction of the Old Paradigm need not be one fraught with blood and peril. It need not be one filled with hatred, anger, fear and ruin. And know this - that the actions you undertake are each one participations in that Destruction.
What is the Intention of your actions? Do you think/feel/believe that actions with negative intention will create a Paradigm of positive intention? That you can pave the road to some peaceful paradise with corpses, flaming ruins, and broken souls?
The New Sun is being created. You are one of the creators. It will be as you, as I, as they make it. Nothing more, nothing less. If you seek peace - act with peace. If you seek love - act with love. If you seek compassion - act with compassion. If you seek justice - act with justice. You will manifest only what you manifest into the world. For how can it be otherwise?

Picking up a Paradigm with the hands of the gods
Let us speak of needs.
Pulling away an old way to allow a new one is full of pain, shock and the failure of the means of the provision of needs. Food, medicine, water, shelter, natural systems - all of these enter states of risk when an entire Paradigm undergoes metamorphosis.
Destruction is the necessary facilitator of Creation - but Creation takes time. Or perhaps more appropriately, Creation happens in the simultaneous now, but it humans manifest delay in integrating creation into their lifespaces. Creation has happened, but humans let go of what is rotten and take up what is fecund slowly.
The letting go of the dead old ways is as a wave traveling through the fluid medium of a population. The ones that have placed themselves furthest away from the epicenter of change will be the last to experience the shock, but will be the ones in most dire need the change once it arrives (if it arrives "in time" at all).
Like doctors and EMTs rushing to the scene of a calamity, those who have placed themselves closest to the epicenter (those who have opened up themselves the most to the reality of the paradigm shift) will be the most needed to aid the transition of those further away - the ones who are less prepared (particularly emotionally and culturally) and therefore who will suffer the most from shock, dislocation, agony, confusion and the victimization of their psychological response to change.
Epicenters will exist and do exist already in many places - really, an epicenter exists inside each person who has come to terms with the change. The swiftness with with those around the epicenters reach out with love, compassion, and the tools of aid (medicine, healing, food, skill, craft, etc.) to those in need will radically color the future of the fluid medium of the population. For the rollback of that wave - for there is a reaction to every action - will vary greatly in its intention and intensity in proportion to the speed and response of those Emergency Paradigm Technicians (EPTs).
If you are integrating this All already, you are already well on your way to being an EPT. The capacity of your compassion to transform potential change into intention evolutionary action is the critical component in what the New Way will manifest as. It is cliche to say, but still true - the future is in your hands. Its in your hearts. You are the change that will come to pass. The ones we have awaited to manifest Yahtaeo, to manifest the New Sun, are US.
As the Meso-Americans mythologized, the gods sacrificed themselves for this Sun we live in, now dying and rotting away to make room for the next. We are the gods on the ground now. Its on US.

Manifesting the Dream
Creating the Dream from the ambiguous aether of the neurospheric entanglement of Beingness...
That is to say, manifesting something Real from the overarching transphysical reality within which we sympathetically vibrate...
Or, in other words, making actual what is dreamt about, what is postulated, what is supposed, imagined, participated in at the theoretical or artistic level. Transitioning from fantasy to simulation to immediate omnipresent reality as we accept it...
To do so, one must fertilize the seeds of what IS To Come with the remnants of what WAS Never To Be.
For there to be creation, there must also be destruction. Paving the way for the future that is unfolding in the Now requires the extermination of the present Now manifest.
Sometimes, the greatest act of compassion is murder. A mother bird feeds her children with the death of countless worms. Each one is a destiny sacrificed to Manifest the fledgling's opportunity to Be. Never ignorantly or naively assume otherwise. For to do so is to victimize one's responsibility to Power, to Medicine, to Destiny, to the Manifestation of the Dream in the Now.
Take responsibility for your Power. Take responsibility for your Manifestation's impact on others. To blithely assume that any positive action is without negative consequences is to fall victim to eternal immaturity. The Yin and the Yang balance one another, as a fundamental consequence of our Beingness in this Transversal Manifestation.
When you can Manifest a Now that transcends mere gratification, and resonates with Integrity, Compassion and Love - then you beget something of merit into History; into Reality; into Being. KNOW yourself. KNOW Why you seek what you seek. Delude not yourself with your own illusions and pretensions. Own completely what you seek to make without excuse or compromise.
To do otherwise is to ensure another endless cycle of failure. Another endless cycle of disappointment. Another endless cycle of stagnation. Another endless cycle of injustice.
Eternity is too short to be wasted. ACT with Ownership of the All of You, the All of Your Intention, the All of Your Impact, the All of Your Calamity, the All of Your Blessing.
If you do, we may all in turn be saved by your Integrity.
Would you allow us that chance?

Walking the Path Towards the Next Manifestation
Do you know what you are creating?
How often do we act, pursuing intuition, strategy or vision, and find ourselves at a destination at the end of our efforts different then what we imagined when we set out?
Occupation is creating. It is building. It is manifesting something new. But from this viewpoint here, I see outcomes and end states that surprise me as much as a sense that they will inevitably surprise the currently entangled participants in the effort.
Recall previously the discussion about the desire to take power, and its ultimate uses? Rotten and diseased structures only produce contagion, no matter who captains them. A melting iceberg is still as doomed even if one Penguin Emperor replaces another.
The rallying cry to take back power - to re-establish control over government - to demand accountability - falls into that trap. The positive intentionality behind these efforts can only fully blossom when it embraces the creative evolutionary forces that subconsciously drive it.
And, unknowingly, it already is.
The crisis of this society resides most definitely with the unwillingness of its participants to PARTICIPATE; to engage with their ownership of it and their own lives. Too much of what it fundamentally means to be Human, to ourselves, to others, has been willfully abandoned by WE THE PEOPLE. The populace has traded (sometimes at gunpoint) demography and ideology for Humanity. And it is, and always will be, a terrible trade.
The creative evolutionary forces that are driving the changes we now see were only let loose because of the collapse of social structures and programming built towards the facilitation of the denial of our Humanity. Consciously, they have at this point manifested as protest and demand against WHAT IS. Unconsciously, they have brought the members of our society together to engage in acts of Common Humanity with one another.
The Occupation encampments are rebooting Humanity in this country in a sense broader than any yet seen before. They are empowering people to work together, to live together, to govern together, to fight together to preserve those things that are most important to them. The living lessons of Human society on display in these camps ARE the point of all of this. They are WHAT IS LACKING most glaringly in our alienated, numb and isolated society. It was only after the liberation of economic and political catastrophe that we could take the steps to re-engage with those most fundamental of Human truths.
It is what gives meaning to the things that we do, for ourselves and for the survival of those around us. Without that meaning, without that sense of Humanity held in Common, our actions become nothing more than hollow signifiers - void and valueless, a series of charades keeping us occupied between now and the grave.
The Occupation movement is evolving, and will hopefully continue to evolve. If the people participating in it, and those supporting it, allow it to run its Own course, there will be - in its own time - a more definitive manifestation of change in this society than the one that, at least most broadly, is currently advocated for by its membership.
And let there be NO DOUBT here: Societies strive for their own survival. This movement is an ardent cry for salvation by our subconscious selves. And this voice, if strangled callously by those fearful of evolution, will turn to Thunder.
And woe then to each and every one of us.
